Pepper
Arabian Mare
Pepper came to us from a home with many horses who were severely picking on her. Horse herds have a hierarchy, and she was on the very bottom. She is a sweet but anxious girl. Her insecurity and background have lead her to be very herd bound and she is attached at the hip to Shiggy. With time, patience, and consistency, however, she is gaining self confidence and settling in nicely.
Chandler
Standard Donkey
Chandler is the sweetest and most shy animal on the farm. He and Joey were adopted from Peaceful Valley Donkey Rescue in 2018. PVDR is based in Texas, but they have satellite adoption centers around the country, and Chandler and Joey came from the one based in Riverside, WA. We don't know much about his background, but his timid and sometimes fearful behavior has lead us to believe there is probably abuse in his past. He has come a long way since he's been here, though, and gaining confidence every day.
Joey
Standard Donkey
Joey is a young donkey with a fun spirit. He and Chandler were adopted from Peaceful Valley Donkey Rescue (PVDR) in 2018. PVDR is based in Texas, but they have satellite adoption centers around the country, and Chandler and Joey came from the one based in Riverside, WA. The only thing we know about Joey's past is that he was picked up as a stray in Texas. He is very confident and sometimes ornery, but if you show him respect , he'll give it back to you.
Conan
Buff Orpington Rooster
We didn't intend to have a rooster, but sometimes it can be difficult to correctly identify the gender of a baby chick. We thought Conan was just a bossy pullet until one day he let out a "cock-a-doodle-doo!" and we realized we had a rooster on our hands. Conan does a great job protecting his flock and keeping a lookout for predators. Sometimes that means even startling us with a double kick to our knees if he feels we're too close to his girls.
Karen, Hedwig, Luna, Foggy, Hei Hei, Sally, Phoebe, Hoochie & Mama
Chickens
Conan's girls are entertaining to watch and will flock all around you if you have some grubs or scratch for them to eat. Karen is a an Australorp, Hedwig is an Easter Egger, Luna is a Buff Orpington. Our newest editions to the flock are Sally, a Black Orpington, Phoebe, a Blue Fauvacana, and Hoochie & Mama are Gold Kissed Granite Olive Eggers.
Jay-Quel-in
Barn Cat
Jay-Quel-in was adopted from the barn cat program at Kitten Rescue of Mason County. She was never socialized as a kitten, so the barn cat program adopts cats out to homes that agree to let them live their best lives hunting rodents around the property instead of expecting them to interact with humans. Her home base is the tack room in the barn, which has a cat door for her to go in and out of, a nonstop supply of cat food and fresh water and a cat condo to sleep in at night. We keep her room warm in winter and cool in summer and she rewards us with the gift of many rodent bodies to remind us she's doing her job. She has no desire for human interaction, so we rarely see her during the day, but we're grateful for her presence.
Penelope
Poodle Mix
Penny became a part of our family as a puppy in 2014 and is the only non-rescue at the Sanctuary other than the chickens. Teri hoped to partner with her as a therapy dog, but she made it clear pretty quickly that she prefers to stick with only one human. She earned her Canine Good Citizen certificate at age 2 and excelled in several obedience classes. Now that she's entering her senior years, she's enjoying being the Queen of the farm.
Remy
Chihuahua Mix
Remy came to us from a rescue in Texas and is 14 pounds of personality. He loves to sprint as fast as he can around the sanctuary, barking at anything that needs reminding that he's the boss. He challenges visitors with a barrage of barking until he can determine if they are a dog person or not. Once he knows someone is kind, he is a sweetheart, but he can spot someone who doesn't like animals a mile away.
George
Alpine Goat
George is usually a laid-back, gentle, and sometimes shy dude. He and Jerry were adopted in 2018 from Puget Sound Goat Rescue in Enumclaw, WA. He loves pets and hugs, but needs to feel safe around a new person before allowing it. He has some arthritis in his joints that slow him down a bit, but it is well managed with daily pain medication.
Poppet & Schatzi
Chinchillas
These sweet but shy girls were adopted from Center Valley Animal Rescue in Quilcene, WA. They came to the rescue after their owner moved out of an apartment and left them behind. We are slowly building their trust and love watching them dash from level to level and sprint in their exercise wheel.
Newman & Kramer
Guinea Pigs
These cutie patooties were adopted from Critterqueen's Rabbit Rescue. They were rarely handled when younger, so they are a bit timid, but they are full of personality and love their veggies! Their squeals and rumbles are adorable to listen to and we love seeing them jump for joy around their playpen when they're feeling frisky.
